How to Conquer Your First Day at the Gym



Congratulations on finally mustering up the courage to put on your sneakers and hit the gym. It’s your first day, you’ve got no idea what to do, and all that you do know is that you’re trying to cut belly fat and build a little bit of muscle.

Before you hit the gym, you need to know what to bring with you. Bring a lock to put your bag and personal items in the locker. An essential item for any physical activity is a water bottle. You don’t know it yet but you’ll be thirsty when you exercise. Also, bring a towel with you to dab your forehead or lay down on any machines you may use. If you like to listen to music while you exercise, then bring an ipod or walkman. Make sure your music listening device is one that doesn’t hinder your workout.

If this truly is your first time in the gym and working out, you can’t just start banging out bench presses and squats. Find a spot away from people and do a set or two of warm up exercises. Warm your joints, muscles, and prep your body for exercise with mobility movements. A common mistake people make is to overwork their bodies on the first day at the gym. Move through the exercises planned for that day’s workout at a lower intensity. Find an enjoyable warm-up and remember to listen to your body’s cues. Your warm-up should not fatigue you.

Then, try a little bit of everything. No matter what you do, your body will be in shock. You are putting it through unfamiliar stress. Even though it is your first day at the gym, you should remember that each session should include more than three exercises for each muscle group. Test your body and see what exercises are right for you.

Always wipe or clean up the equipment after you are done. Gyms do clean their machines but it is still easy to become exposed to another person’s sweat if you use the machine shortly after they do. To be clear, your sweat is not giving anyone the flu, but bacterial infections are a completely different story. If you don’t have a towel, most gyms have paper towel and sanitation stations to wipe off machines when you are done. Another thing you should do is to put away your weights when you are done. If the weights are too heavy for you to put back, ask for help or use a lighter weight the next time you work out.

Another thing to keep in mind on your first day at the gym is to consider which clothes would work best for your workout. When you go to the gym, it is important to wear clothes that are breathable and flexible. It’s good to look good, but it is important to know that the best workout clothes are designed to make working out as comfortable as possible. While many people want to look good while they exercise, your workout clothes should be less about fashion and more about comfort and fit. Several factors can affect how comfortable your workout clothes are, including the fabric they’re made of and whether they’re right for the type of exercise you will be doing. This is why it is extremely important to know which clothes to choose when exercising, whether it will be in the gym or just jogging in the local park. Wearing the proper clothing can make the difference between an enjoyable workout and an hour of absolute misery. The third thing you need to consider is the season. For winter season you can use to wear full sleeve t-shirts or sweatshirts for workout which helps to keep body warm and give enough comfort. Having the right footwear can also give you both comfort and safety. The right shoes can make all the difference between feeling refreshed and having aching feet after your workout.
