Nowadays national cuisines from all over the world have become international. You can go to any country in Europe, for example, and you could have traditional American or Asian dishes. The interesting thing is that there are some dishes which are made following the traditional national recipes and there are also other recipes with a modern twist to it.
Today we decided to show you some Korean recipes with some not so straightforward twist to them. You can try them out on your own at home and find out whether Korean cuisine matches your personal taste. And here are the recipes!
#1 Spicy Korean Pork
1 and ½ pounds of pork belly or shoulder
¼ cup of Korean red chili paste
3 stalks of green onion
3 cloves of garlic
¼ cup of soy sauce
1 tablespoon of minced ginger
1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons of rice wine
1 tablespoon of sesame oil
1 tablespoon of sugar
1 teaspoon of black pepper
First you need to slice the pork meat and then to cut it into smaller pieces which need to be about a bite big. There could be a little bigger if you like, for example, a couple of bites big, but not much bigger. Then put them in a big bowl.
Get the onion and cut it into semi-round pieces. Then slice the stalks of green onions in halves vertically and add both types of onions into the bowl with the pork meat. Then chop the garlic, or you could even mince it, and add it into the bowl with the rest of the products.
Season the ingredients in the bowl with the ginger and then add the Korean chili paste. And then you need to add the rest of the ingredients in the bowl starting with the red pepper flakes, then add the soy sauce and the rice wine. Finish with pouring the sesame oil and then seasoning all of the ingredients with the sugar and the black pepper.
The next thing you need to do is to make sure all the ingredients in the bowl are nicely mixed so they are evenly seasoned. The whole mixture will be turned red because of the chili paste. And this way the dish will turn into a traditional Asian looking one. Then you need to cover the bowl with some cooking foil and leave it somewhere cool to marinate for half an hour or more.
When the time for the marinate passes, get a deep pan and heat some olive oil in it. Stir-fry the pork mixture by stirring it every now and then so it is evenly cooked on each side. The meat will shrink a little and this will show you in a way that the dish is almost ready. You still need to taste it to see if the meat is cooked or if it needs some more stir-frying.
When it is ready you can serve it with some white cooked rice as a garnish since rice is a traditional dish for Asian cuisine as a while. And voila, the dish is ready!
#2 Soy Sauce Korean Ribs
3 pounds of back ribs
½ cup of soy sauce
1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
2 tablespoons of sesame oil
2 tablespoons of red pepper powder
8 cloves of garlic
1 tablespoon of grated ginger
1 cup of chopped onions
¼ cup of honey
First you need a bowl in which to pour the soy sauce. Then mix it with the rice vinegar and add the sesame oil. Mix them a little and then add the red pepper powder. Chop very thinly the garlic cloves and then add them into the bowl with the other ingredients. Then add the ginger and the chopped onions. Stir the mixture well.
When you are ready with the sauce, get the back ribs and put them in a deep baking tin. Then get the sauce and pour the sauce you prepared in the first step. Cover the ribs well with the sauce and then let it marinate for at least 4 hours. This way the meat will absorb as much as possible from the sauce. And do not forget to cover the tin with some foil.
When the 4 hours pass, take the ribs out of this tin and put them in another one to bake them. Keep the remaining sauce. Bake the ribs for 2 ½ – 3 hours at 1600 C. It is best to cook the meat at low temperature and to take longer because this way it will become more tender and delicious.
While you are waiting for the ribs to get baked, you can prepare the extra sauce you will cover the ribs with when they are ready. Get a deep pan and pour the remaining sauce from the marinate in in. Heat it a little and then add the honey into the pan. Let the mixture star boiling. Meanwhile you should not forget to stir it constantly. Let the mixture boil for a minute and then take the pan off the hotplate.
When the ribs are ready, take them out of the oven and pour the sauce over them evenly. You can also use a cooking brush to spread it a little. Then you need to cut the ribs into separate pieces. And voila, the dish is ready!
