Everything You Need to Know About Your Tanning Options

Almost all of the women out there are seeking that sun-kissed skin tone, making the tanning industry a multi-billion-dollar business. From pre-tan prep to post-tan maintenance, see your tanning options and learn the secrets to the perfect sunless tan with these tips!

  1. Tanning Lotions

Let’s first talk about tanning lotions.  If you have ever found yourself shopping for tanning lotions or creams, you may be overwhelmed by the options that are out there. The shelves are lined with tons of containers and tubes of products for tanning that you may be completely clueless to their uses.  Tanning “lotion” is abroad term for products used to enhance the tanning process and increase melanin production in the skin. Consistencies vary from lotions, creams, and mousse, to gels, oils, and sprays. The first step, of course, is to choose your favourite self-tanner. The options are endless—some are mousse, some are a lotion-like consistency. It really depends on what you fancy.  However, if your brand of choice doesn’t sell a glove with the product, buy one that is a low investment and can be washed and reused over and over.  Gloves will keep your hands from turning orange and also help to apply the lotion smoothly. It’s always best to apply thin layers that can be built up, rather than slathering on too much product at one time.

  1. Spray Tan

Spray tan is another option on the menu. If done right, they can make you look like a bronzed goddess.  If you want your spray tan to come out right and last longer you actually have to put in some work. Don’t just show up unprepared – just shower the day before your session and give yourself a good scrub and a smooth shave. How much or little clothing you want to wear during your spray tan is up to you. Of course the team is very professional and 100% focused on making sure your spray tan is perfect. Once you’ve been sprayed let the tan set for at least 15 minutes before putting on any clothing or shoes. You should ideally bring loose, dark clothing and nothing that may rub the tan off, like tight ankle boots.  On the day of your spray tan be sure to avoid deodorant, perfumes and lotions since these can prevent the tan from sticking to your skin. Leave your spray tan overnight without showering and avoid water contact.  After your first shower, start moisturizing daily to maintain your tan. Just be sure to stay away from oil-based moisturizers.

  1. Tanning Beds

When it comes to choosing a tanning bed, the first thing to consider is your actual needs.  To know your skin-type is very important for a good result and safe tanning. The amount of melanin in your skin, together with your goal for your tanning, will determine your tanning program and which kind of tanning lotions you should use. Thus, you must always consult the professionals in the salon. Your skin should be clean and clear of dead buildup beforehand. You want your skin layer to obtain the best brown possible, so using mild water and soap or body wash and also a good quality exfoliator is important.

Every tanning bed comes with instructions for the maximum amount of time for each tanning session, based upon the number of and kind of lamps the bed uses. Even if you want to get as dark as possible, do not take any risks with too long tanning sessions in too strong tanning beds. You must let your skin get used to tanning slowly. On another note, you definitely need to wear eye protection if you are going to use a tanning bed. In fact, the FDA requires that tanning salons provide that protection for their customers and check that their customers are wearing it. Always use tanning lotions specially made for indoor tanning in tanning beds. The role of such lotions is to keep you skin well moisturized, provide anti-oxidation and rejuvenation as well as add bronzing tan-enhancers.
